HOW TO SPEED UP YOUR COMPUTER
WHY DO COMPUTERS RUN SLOWLY?
Essentially, a computer runs slowly because of too much demand for processing power. Over time we add pictures, games, music and movies to our computers. Items such as these begin to consume the power of our computer. After a while, there are too many things running and the resources of the computer are taken up. In addition to too many files and programs you may have bad software such as Malware, Adware. Another reason for a slow computer is that your the map of files on your computer needs to be defragmented. The map of the files or the file registry is used to locate programs on your hard drive. Over time the files are stored in pieces and this makes using the map time consuming.
- Too many software programs are running
- Not enough space on your hard drive
- Not enough memory is available
- A registry of the files on your computer that needs to be optimized
HERE ARE FEW WAYS TO IMPROVE A SLOW PC
LOOK FOR VIRUSES
The first thing to do is to deep scan your PC for viruses. Viruses can slow down your computer so you will want to remove these. There are many programs on the market to remove viruses. Most of the programs are priced from $25 to $100. This may seem expensive but using these programs can save you a lot of time. Another way to handle this is to take your computer to a repair shop. Repair shops in malls, for example, are quite common. You simply drop off your computer for an hour while the technician runs software to clean your machine. Generally, it’s better to buy the sofware yourself as you will need to remove viruses from time to time. Going to a computer repair shop every other month is time consuming.
UNINSTALL PROGRAMS YOU DO NOT USE
Get rid of software you do not use. To delete these programs click “start” then go to “control panel.” Click “programs and features” and look through the list, delete the sofware that you don’t use. When you purchase a new computer you will also want to delete the programs that you don’t intend to use.
TURN OFF STARTUP PROGRAMS YOU DO NOT NEED
There are many programs that begin when you turn on your computer. These are called start up programs. You will want to reduce the number of startup programs.
To turn off startup programs, type “misconfig” on the Start-Menu in windows 8 and 8.1. For windows vista, windows 7 and windows 10 you use the search box in the Start-Menu. This will start the configuration utility. Click on the startup tab and turn off all the programs that you do not need.
DELETE TEMPORARY FILES
As you use your computer it builds up files. These are temporary files. The temporary files are logs or records of things happening in your computer. The files can aid someone in checking programs or making repairs. Most people, however, do not need these files day to day. The build up of files can slow down your computer. To get rid of these files you can use the Windows-Disk-Cleanup utility to clean them. To do this you type “cleanmgr.exe” in the Run-dialog-box. You can also purchase computer software to remove these files. If you purchase software to clean up your temporary files you simply click it and it runs. Also you can set a schedule for the clean up to happen automatically on a set day each week.
FIND AND REMOV ADWARE, SPYWARE AND MALWARE
New computers will not have adware, spyware or malware. Over time as you are on the internet these programs can get onto your machine. These types of programs can be harmful and they also slow down your computer. You need a program to detect and remove them.
DO A DISK DEFRAGMENT
Your computer stores files in pieces. When possible your computer will store files in pieces that are close together. This make finding and running files faster and more efficient. Over time, however, this is difficult to do and your files are stored in pieces in random places. This is called fragmentation and can lead to a slow computer. Your computer is slower because your machine needs to find all the file pieces and put them together to run the file. Defragmenting is the process of finding the pieces, put them together and storing your files more efficiently. You can defragment your hard drive using the Windows-Disk-Defragmenter program.
DEACTIVATE SEARCH INDEXING SERVICE
The search indexing service in your computer looks through the folders and files on your computer. It records data about the files in an index . This speeds up the search process. This can result consumption of processing power and slow your machine. You can turn off the indexing service to speed-up your machine. To turn off the indexing service, type “services.msc” in the Run-dialog-box. On the right hand side, click on Windows Search service. Click on the disable tab and restart your computer. Generally it’s a good idea to keep this indexing service on if you are looking for files.
USE A REGISTRY CLEANER
The registry is a map of active systems files and installed programs on your computer are stored. Over time, the registry can get muddied with inefficient information. This happens as you install and uninstall programs. It also happens because most people don’t remove the program’s registry entries when they remove a program. To solve this problem, use a software known as a registry cleaner to remove unnecessary entries.
